*****************************************
The 50-year-old JPM Vasarely Museum is undergoing renovation, and is therefore temporarily closed.
During this period, Vasarely’s works are on view in the large temporary exhibition hall of the JPM Modern Hungarian Gallery, presented in a new curatorial concept and including several works that were not previously shown in the permanent exhibition of the JPM Vasarely Museum.
The works will return to the renewed JPM Vasarely Museum in April 2026.
In the meantime, visitors are encouraged to explore the temporary exhibition opening on 13 January 2026 at the JPM Modern Hungarian Gallery (Plastic Units and Codable Textures), which presents the oeuvre of the master of optical illusions from a fresh perspective.
As a pioneer of the op art movement, Victor Vasarely (Győző Vásárhelyi) is one of the prominent artists of the 20th century art. Vasarely was born in Pécs in 1906 but after emigrating to France at his young age, most of his works were created abroad. The Pécs collection provides a comprehensive overview of Vasarely’s oeuvre from the period of the early graphics to the abstract geometric and kinetic works and the large size paintings and tapestries demonstrating the three-dimensional effects of colours. Works by Claire Vasarely, the spouse of Victor Vasarely, and their son, Yvaral (Jean-Pierre Vasarely) are also on display at the Pécs Vasarely Museum.
