The JPM Modern Hungarian Gallery houses one of the most significant collections of Hungarian fine arts, offering a comprehensive cross-section of outstanding works from 20th-century Hungarian art in its broadest sense. The carefully curated collection, featuring numerous key works, presents the artistic development and diversity of the past century.
The chronological arc of the collection begins from the last decades of the 19th century, spanning from the paintings of László Mednyánszky and József Rippl-Rónai, through Lajos Gulácsy's surrealistic world and the avant-garde endeavors of the Group of Eight artists, to the outstanding works of later decades. The internationally renowned Hungarian artists of the mid-20th century, such as sculptor Amerigo Tot or architect-designer Marcel Breuer, also have their place in the exhibition. The display leads visitors all the way to today's outstanding creators, among whom one of the most important is a Pécs artist, Ilona Keserü.
In addition to the permanent exhibition, the gallery's two temporary exhibition spaces regularly host major retrospective and smaller chamber exhibitions.
