Who we are
Pécs is renowned for its museums, galleries, festivals, and cultural events.
The Janus Pannonius Museum is a key cultural institution in Pécs and Baranya County, with its permanent and temporary exhibitions serving as popular tourist attractions.
The museum spans five disciplines: fine and applied arts, archaeology, ethnography, natural sciences, and urban history. Through its vibrant scientific, cultural, educational, and museum pedagogy programs, JPM engages visitors of all ages, offering meaningful and enriching experiences while promoting lifelong learning. You can also meet us at special events like the Night of Museums, Museum Street Days, or the historical Parade of the Cross and Crescent, as well as through individual programs and guided tours.
Finding our museums won’t be a challenge – many of them are conveniently located in the city center. Káptalan Street, often called ‘Museum Street’, is home to several museum buildings. Take a stroll along Museum Street and its surroundings to uncover the city's treasures!
One of the most visited permanent exhibitions showcases the works of Tivadar Kosztka Csontváry, a towering figure in Hungarian art. His world-famous masterpiece The Lonely Cedar is among the highlights displayed in the gallery.
Don’t miss the JPM Vasarely Museum, dedicated to Pécs-born Victor Vasarely, a pioneer of op-art. The geometric and vibrant pieces on display offer a visually captivating experience.
Just across the Museum street, the JPM Zsolnay Museum awaits in the city’s oldest residential building. Here, you can explore the evolution of architectural ceramics, admire the Zsolnay factory’s finest decorative pieces, and learn about Vilmos Zsolnay’s key inventions, including porcelain-faience and eosin technology.
The museum’s fine and applied arts collection is internationally significant with the JPM Modern Hungarian Gallery offering a remarkable overview of 20th-century Hungarian painting, just steps away from Museum Street.
